The National Party leader at election time was Don Brash. Gerry Brownlee is deputy leader. Wayne Eagleson was appointed chief of staff in November 2005 in his Parliamentary office to succeed Richard Long, former newspaper editor. Mr Eagleson is an expert in "reputation management and stakeholder relations" said Dr Brash.

National's senior Whip is Lindsay Tisch, the Junior Whip is Anne Tolley.

During the first week of November the spokespeople had changed - Dr Brash stripped the lowest ranking of his spokspeople, Brian Connell, of his responsibilities. This followed expressions of dissent from the backbencher, dissatisfied with the position given to him and other issues. The South Island Rakaia MP, who had won his seat with a substantial majority, had said "Under MMP, MPs have a choice - serve the party or serve the electorate. My route has been to serve the electorate and not blindly follow the party line".
