National MP promises hard look at aid, Niue John Hayes, National MP for Wairarapa said in his maiden speech in November 2005 he would look hard at aid expenditure. Do not expect me to sit silent while more than $28m is given to Niue and its 1400 people without any obligation to overhaul its political system which has twenty members of Parliament. Help Niueans or constitutuents in need at home? " I am all for helping Niue but in doing so I am also thinking about a constituent who needs to find $90,000 because our government won’t meet the cost of the cancer drug she needs. I think too of the doors I knocked on while campaigning where I met older citizens wrapped in blankets because they could not afford to pay for electricity or others without sleep and in pain because they had been waiting 18 months for a hip operation the new MP said. Lessons for Tokelau Lessons learnt in Niue and elsewhere by New Zealand should influence what is done in Tokelau John Hayes said in his maiden speech. John Hayes MP is a National Party associate spokesperson on NZ foreign affairs and on Pacific affairs, and a former member of the NZ Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Updated 14 December 2005 |
