Andrew Afeaki says:
At the time I am thinking about, it is interesting that my father and family had always seemed to be able to put more things together than most people around. They had cattle beasts, they had horses, they had goats and pigs, rather large numbers for those small places. They had boats with a motor in it, which was quite something in those days. The 40s, and 50s and in the late 30s they even had that. With boats in that little Ha’apai setting, they got themselves fishing nets, and things like that. But they would catch fish and give it away. That was just part of their setting. I think they were conscious those things were sold elsewhere. But not in their little economy. Not in the world I was growing up in the 40s.
